Origins of Volleyball

• The sport of volleyball has historical roots dating back to the Roman Empire, with indications that a form of it was played 200 years BC.

• Football is noted as a precursor to volleyball, particularly in Italy and Germany between the 13th and 18th centuries.

Creation of Volleyball

• William Morgan, influenced by tennis and badminton, created volleyball on February 9, 1895, aiming for a less aggressive sport suitable for older youth.

• Morgan initially considered tennis but discarded it due to equipment requirements; he found the idea of a net appealing.

Development of Equipment

• The first attempts at creating a ball included using basketball materials but were deemed unsuitable; thus, Morgan designed a leather ball with rubber inside weighing about 300 grams.

• Initially named "minuto net," combining elements from badminton and French terminology for "small," reflecting its design similarities.

Naming and Early Rules

• Alfred Halstead proposed renaming the sport to "volleyball," emphasizing the concept of keeping the ball airborne.

• The term "voleibol" was written separately until 1952 when it became one word; this change also affected its Spanish translation.

First Official Match and Rule Changes

• The first official volleyball match took place on July 7, 1896, at Springfield College; early rules allowed any number of players with no limit on touches per team.

• In 1896, initial regulations established court dimensions (7.5 x 15 meters), net height (2.13 meters), and scoring rules similar to tennis regarding faults.

Expansion and Global Popularity

• By 1900, an exclusive volleyball was designed; net height increased to approximately 2.3 meters as the sport began spreading globally.

• Volleyball gained traction in Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, and Europe between the early 1900s; national championships started in the U.S. from 1922 to 1928.

International Recognition

• Japan adopted volleyball in schools around 1910; by then it had become popular enough to be included in international competitions like the Far Eastern Games in 1913.

• In World War I, U.S. military education programs incorporated volleyball due to its popularity among troops stationed abroad.

Olympic Inclusion

• Volleyball debuted as a demonstration sport at the Paris Olympics in 1924 before becoming an official Olympic event in Tokyo from October 13–23,1964.

• The first Olympic medals were awarded: USSR won gold (men's), while Japan secured gold (women's); other notable placements included Czechoslovakia and Poland.

History and Variants of Volleyball

Founding and Membership

• The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) was founded on April 18, 1947, in Paris by 14 countries including Belgium, Brazil, and the USA.

• Currently, FIVB has 222 member federations. The first president was Oliva, and since 1984, its headquarters is located in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Variants of Volleyball

• Beach volleyball became an Olympic discipline in 1996; it is played on sand courts with teams of two players each.

• Sitting volleyball is designed for athletes with disabilities and has been part of the Paralympic Games since 1980.

• Informal variants include cachibol for older adults (six players per team) and Ecuador's unique version called "echo a bolt."

Court Dimensions and Equipment

• The volleyball court measures 18 meters long by 9 meters wide; the central line separates both teams' areas.

• The playing surface must not be slippery or rough due to constant player contact with the ground. The net height is set at 2.43 meters for men and 2.24 meters for women in adult categories.

Ball Specifications

• Until 1998, the official ball was white; now it can have multiple colors. It is spherical, made from leather or synthetic materials with a rubber inner chamber that holds air. Its circumference ranges from 65 to 67 cm and weighs between 260 to 280 grams.

Game Structure and Scoring

Match Format

• A match consists of five sets; a team wins when they reach three sets won (first to accumulate at least 25 points). If a fifth set occurs, it goes up to only 15 points but still requires a two-point lead to win. Teams switch sides after each set or if a fifth set is played.

Player Roles

• Involvement of the libero position was introduced in 1998 allowing substitutions specifically for defensive roles without restrictions on entry/exit during play; this benefits shorter players as well as overall team strategy by having specialized defenders available during matches.

Olympic Achievements in Volleyball

Men's Medals Overview

• Men's volleyball has seen significant achievements: Russia leads with four gold medals (three from the Soviet Union), followed by Japan, Poland, USA (3 each), Brazil (3), Netherlands (1), and Yugoslavia (1).

Women's Medals Overview

• For women's volleyball: USSR holds four gold medals while China has three along with Cuba; Japan also secured two gold medals alongside Brazil's two victories in Olympic history.( t =649 s )

Legendary Players

• Karch Kiraly is recognized as one of the greatest volleyball players ever—he won Olympic gold medals both indoors (1984 & '88) and on the beach ('96). He also coached Team USA women’s team to victory at Tokyo Olympics in '21.( t =691 s )

Brazilian Representation

• Giba led Brazil's successful generation starting from early '2000's winning three Olympic medals: one gold & two silver along with being crowned world champion thrice.( t =712 s )
