Learn the Rules of Floorball
Introduction to Floorball
- The objective of the game is to score more goals than the opposing team. Floorball, also known as unihockey, is a popular sport in Europe and Asia.
- Teams consist of five field players and one goalkeeper. The stick resembles an ice hockey stick, while the ball is made of plastic with holes.
Game Setup and Play
- The playing field typically measures a maximum of 40 x 20 meters, with specific dimensions for goals (1 meter wide by 1.15 meters high). The match starts with a face-off at center court.
- Once a team has possession, they must attempt to shoot the ball towards the goal using passes or dribbling techniques. Defenders aim to regain possession without excessive physical contact allowed.
Rules Regarding Contact and Equipment
- Players cannot raise their sticks above waist height or lift the ball above knee level during play; goalkeepers are exempt from these restrictions but cannot leave their area without penalty.
- After each goal, play resumes with a face-off from center court; matches last three periods totaling 60 minutes for adults or shorter durations for lower categories (45 minutes total).
Substitutions and Fouls
- Teams can substitute players freely at any time; however, exiting players must be off the substitution area before new ones enter. Goalkeepers can be replaced by attacking players but will leave the goal empty during that time.
- Free hits are awarded for rule violations involving sticks or balls; non-offending teams take free hits from where fouls occur, while penalized players serve time on the bench based on foul severity (2 or 5 minutes).
Timeouts and Overtime Procedures
- Each team is allowed one 30-second timeout per period to rest or strategize during gameplay. If teams are tied after regulation time, an additional ten-minute overtime period is played to determine a winner through first scoring rules.
- Should teams remain tied post-overtime, penalty shootouts ensue where each team takes five attempts against the goalkeeper; highest scorer wins the match.
Conclusion
- Floorball combines elements from various hockey styles into its unique set of rules tailored for this sport's gameplay dynamics—encouraging enjoyment while playing!
