The Future of Electrical Work Is Here: Inside Schneider at NECA 2025

Schneider Electric Innovations at NA Chicago

Integrated Power Center Overview

  • The integrated power center is designed for low voltage panel boards and transformers, aimed at improving contractor efficiency during installation.
  • It encourages contractors to reconsider transformer placement, suggesting ground-level installations to enhance accessibility and safety.
  • This product integrates a 225 KVA low voltage transformer with pre-wired breakers, facilitating easier connections for applications like EV charging stations.
  • The components used are standard products available from electrical distributors, ensuring easy replacement and compatibility in case of issues.
  • Customization options are available; clients can specify their needs through electrical one-line panel schedules.

Space Efficiency and Design Features

  • The design allows for stacking panels above the transformer, reducing wall space requirements by approximately two-thirds compared to traditional setups.
  • The structure's depth is 24 inches, primarily utilized for ventilation rather than additional equipment space.
  • Ambient air circulation helps manage heat within the unit effectively.

Mini Power Zone Introduction

  • The mini power zone is a compact low voltage unit substation that offers quick installation due to its preassembled nature.
  • Available in sizes ranging from 3 KVA to 30 KVA, it supports both single-phase and three-phase configurations with various output options.
  • Each unit includes a transformer paired with a panel board and main disconnect, streamlining power distribution.

H Frame Breaker and Transformer Insights

Overview of H Frame Breaker

  • The H frame breaker is utilized across the entire product line, available at three AIC levels: 18 AIC, 25 AIC, and 65 AIC.
  • It is recommended to specify requirements in advance, often seen with unit substations or mini power zones.

Transformer Specifications

  • The transformer contributes significantly to the weight; it can be separated from the device for mounting purposes. Without it, a display can lose up to 70 lbs.
  • Designed specifically for outdoor applications, the transformer is resin encapsulated and embedded in sand for durability.

Enclosure Options

  • Available in a complete stainless steel enclosure suitable for corrosive environments (Type 3X), while standard options meet Type 3R specifications.
  • Although designed primarily for outdoor use, it can be placed anywhere due to its robust design meeting various environmental standards.

Transfer Switch Features and Innovations

Predictive Outage Detection

  • The newly launched predictive outage detection feature aims to minimize downtime by anticipating power failures before they occur. This innovation builds on common experiences like flickering lights during storms.
  • Traditional transfer switches take time to recognize power failures; this new feature allows proactive measures such as starting generators or transferring loads immediately during flickering events.

Monitoring Thermal Activity

  • Schneider Electric offers a factory option that continuously monitors thermal activity at connection points within transformers using thermal couples connected to both primary and secondary points.
  • If overheating occurs (exceeding set temperature limits), an alarm system activates with visual indicators showing which terminal has exceeded safe temperatures, aiding maintenance efforts effectively.

Installation and Application Versatility

  • The monitoring system is factory-mounted on devices designed for both indoor and outdoor applications, ensuring compliance with weatherproofing standards when necessary. Gaskets are used at ingress points to prevent water intrusion.

Use Cases for Monitoring Technology

Applications in Data Centers

  • The technology is primarily used in low voltage transformers within data centers, allowing for continuous monitoring rather than relying on annual thermal condition snapshots.
  • A gateway can be integrated with Schneider Electric's PME software, enabling users to view real-time temperature data and set notifications for temperature thresholds.
  • If PME is not utilized, the system can still connect to third-party software; however, users would need to create their own dashboards.
  • The pre-programmed dashboard in RPM offers a user-friendly experience compared to developing custom solutions for third-party integrations.
  • This flexibility allows organizations to choose their preferred monitoring systems while still benefiting from the technology's capabilities.
Video description

I stopped by the Schneider Electric booth at NECA Chicago to see what’s new for contractors and facility folks. We dug into three setups that can cut install time, save wall space, and keep equipment protected. First up is the Integrated Power Center (IPC2), which packages a low-voltage transformer with panelboards in a compact, factory-wired structure, ideal when electrical room real estate is tight. We also looked at the Mini Power-Zone, a wall-mounted unit substation that combines a primary disconnect, transformer, secondary main, and branch distribution in one enclosure. It is available in single- and three-phase options and is designed to get small loads online quickly. For standby power, we checked out the ASCO Series 300 transfer switch feature called Predictive Outage Detection. It senses unstable conditions like flicker, then can pre-start the generator or transfer to protect sensitive loads and minimize downtime. Finally, we covered continuous thermal monitoring at transformer terminations. Schneider’s solution can watch primary, secondary, and tap points and feed data into Power Monitoring Expert dashboards for alarms and analytics, so issues get caught before they become failures. 🙏 Thanks to our sponsor, Schneider Electric, for supporting this video.
