Salvador Sea: A Life of Struggle and Transformation

Early Life and Trauma

  • Salvador Sea was born in 1838 in Chicaloma, the son of enslaved parents, Zacarías and Rosa. His early life was marked by trauma when he witnessed his father's brutal death at the hands of a foreman.
  • After her husband's death, Rosa fled to La Paz with young Salvador, settling in a place known as Tambo San José de Chapí, where she worked hard as a cook and food vendor.
  • In La Paz, Salvador befriended Aymara children but soon dropped out of school. His mother struggled to discipline him due to their challenging circumstances.

Influence of Norma

  • Rosa met another woman named Norma (known for her witchcraft), who offered them shelter and work. This arrangement provided some stability for Salvador after his mother's health deteriorated.
  • As Rosa's health declined from pneumonia, she passed away, leaving Salvador under Norma's care. He absorbed much resentment towards non-black individuals during this time.

Transition to Crime

  • During his teenage years, Salvador began working as an apprentice tailor but quickly turned to theft after being accused unjustly by his employer.
  • Following a violent confrontation with the tailor that resulted in murder, Salvador became a skilled thief and formed a gang that terrorized travelers between La Paz and Yungas.

Infamy and Legend

  • The gang targeted travelers on the road to Yungas, committing heinous acts including robbery and violence against women. Their hideout near a lagoon contributed to the legend surrounding Salvador.
  • Rumors painted him as both a sorcerer and avenger for slaves while also depicting him as an unyielding figure against mestizos or white men.

Downfall

  • In 1870, one gang member was captured by police; he revealed details about their crimes leading to their eventual arrest following an infamous convent robbery.
  • Despite initial leniency from President Mariano Melgarejo during their robbery at the convent, they were later apprehended and sentenced to execution.

Final Moments

  • On the day of execution, Norma lamented for her adopted son Sal Vito (Salvador). In his final moments, he blamed her for teaching him crime before being executed alongside his accomplices.
