The Science of Love | John Gottman | TEDxVeniceBeach

Introduction

In this section, the speaker introduces himself and explains why he believes that science is necessary to understand relationships.

  • The speaker has dedicated his life to understanding relationships.
  • Fewer than 10% of people who get divorced ever talk to anyone about their relationship.
  • Science is necessary to develop effective treatments and understand how to make love work.

The Magic of Love

In this section, the speaker discusses the benefits of great love relationships and friendships.

  • Great love relationships and friendships lead to greater health, wealth, resilience, faster recovery from illness, greater longevity, and more successful children.
  • Love has a kind of magic that can do amazing things.

Sleepless in Seattle

In this section, the speaker shares a quote from the movie "Sleepless in Seattle" that highlights the magic of love.

  • Tom Hanks' character describes his wife as someone with whom he was meant to be together because of a million tiny little things. He knew it from the very first time he touched her; it was like coming home only to no home he'd ever known. This moment is described as magical by both characters in the movie.

Building a Love Lab

In this section, the speaker talks about building a "love lab" with his best friend Bob Levenson over 45 years ago.

  • The speaker built a "love lab" with his best friend Bob Levenson over 45 years ago.
  • They built this lab because they realized that their relationships with women were not going very well.

Validated Questionnaires

In this section, the speaker discusses how they use validated questionnaires to assess the strengths of a relationship.

  • The speaker and his wife created a checkup that over 40,000 couples have taken.
  • They use validated questionnaires to assess the strengths of a relationship in areas that need improvement.

Physiological Measures

In this section, the speaker talks about collecting physiological measures from couples as they talk to each other.

  • The speaker collects physiological measures such as heart rate, blood velocity, skin conductance, respiration, and more from couples as they talk to each other.
  • They score emotion second by second using a split-screen arrangement where facial expressions, voice tone, nonverbal behavior, and verbal behavior can be coded accurately and reliably.

Conclusion

In this section, the speaker concludes his talk on love and relationships.

  • Science can help find the magic of love by providing data and understanding relationships better.
  • The speaker's research has shown that great love relationships lead to greater health and wealth among other benefits.
  • Building a "love lab" allowed for basic research followed by applied research which led to validated questionnaires being used to assess relationship strengths in areas needing improvement.
  • Collecting physiological measures from couples while talking allows for accurate coding of emotions during interactions between partners.

The Science of Love

In this section, the speaker discusses how love relationships can be assessed scientifically and how technology can be used to change parameters in a relationship.

Assessing Love Relationships

  • Love relationships can be assessed for their strengths and challenges scientifically.
  • A positive attractor in a relationship draws conversations towards the positive quadrant, resulting in a five-to-one ratio of positive to negative interactions.
  • Physiological calm, trust, and commitment are required for the magic of love to last forever.

Changing Parameters in Relationships

  • Technology has been created that allows therapists to change parameters such as startup, emotional inertia, repair threshold, etc. in a relationship.
  • By changing these parameters at startup, couples can move from negative attractors to positive ones resulting in more positive interactions.
  • Sliders are used to change every parameter in the math equation that models relationships. Green lines show influence functions while arrows show phase space portrait flow.

Conclusion

  • Love relationships are important and there is magic in love that lasts forever.
  • The science behind love relationships has allowed us to mathematically model the magic of lasting love.
Video description

World-renowned relationship expert John Gottman set forth to understand why relationships don’t work, but for that he needed to first understand relationships scientifically. Gottman then measured the behavior, perception and physiology of couples over time to understand how love works. With that he was able to create equations for love and discern the mathematical dynamics of love. His science was able to predict with a 90% accuracy whether relationships would last or not. Finally, his studies conclude that the magic of love requires calm and commitment, which in the end makes the magic of great love a bit less of a mystery. John Gottman speaks about how his scientific research has now created a new understanding of all love relationships (heterosexual and same-sex), across the entire life span. He describes the new LOVE EQUATIONS, and the magic trio of calm, trust, and commitment. For more, visit The Gottman Institute at https://www.gottman.com/. World-renowned for his work on marital stability and divorce prediction, Dr. John Gottman has conducted 40 years of breakthrough research with thousands of couples. He is the author of over 200 published academic articles and author or co-author of more than 40 books, including The New York Times bestseller The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. Dr. Gottman’s media appearances include Good Morning America, Today, CBS Morning News, and Oprah, as well articles in The New York Times, Redbook, Glamour, Woman’s Day, People, Self, and Psychology Today. Co-founder of The Gottman Institute with his wife, Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, John is a Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Washington where he founded ”The Love Lab" at which much of his research on couples interactions was conducted. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
