  • For 3.5, look at '5'; as it’s equal or greater than five, round up to '4'.

  • In chemistry, rounding must adhere to significant figures (sig figs), which are essential for accurate final answers.

Rules for Significant Figures

  1. Non-zero numbers are always significant.
  1. Zeros between non-zero digits are significant.
  1. Zeros after a decimal point are significant.
  1. Coefficients in scientific notation count as sig figs; ignore other parts.
  1. Leading zeros before non-zero digits are not significant.
  1. Zeros in whole numbers without decimals are not significant.

Practice with Significant Figures

  • Example: Round 341 to two sig figs; common mistake is rounding it down incorrectly to 34 instead of correctly identifying it as 340.
