What is Matter and Its States?

Understanding Matter

  • Everything around us that occupies space is termed matter, composed of incredibly small units called atoms.
  • There are over 100 different types of atoms, which combine to form various forms of matter, similar to how the 26 letters of the alphabet create words.

Molecules and Their Formation

  • When two or more atoms bond together, they form a molecule. Atoms and molecules aggregate in vast quantities to constitute all matter we encounter.

States of Matter

  • Matter can exist in three primary states: solid, liquid, and gas. Each state has distinct characteristics:
  • Solid: Maintains its shape (e.g., wood, ice).
  • Liquid: Flows easily and takes the shape of its container (e.g., water, milk).
  • Gas: Expands to fill available space (e.g., air).

Changes Between States

  • The transition between these states involves changes in atomic arrangement due to energy variations:
  • Solids become liquids through melting when heat is applied.

Melting Process

  • Observing melting occurs with substances like chocolate or butter; applying sufficient heat allows even hard solids like metals to melt into liquid forms.

Freezing Process

  • Conversely, cooling a liquid causes it to freeze as atoms slow down and lock together into a solid state. This process is evident when water freezes into ice or cream turns into ice cream.
