GPT and ELT: Productive, Disruptive, or Destructive (Paul Raine)
In this presentation, the speaker will address questions such as "what is GPT?", "what is ELT?" and even "what does it mean to learn a language?" The speaker will contend that ChatGPT will certainly disrupt the ELT industry, but whether that disruption is productive or destructive will depend on the way the technology is adopted and used by teachers and learners of English. Theories of language learning such as Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development and Canale and Swain's "communicative competence" will be re-examined in the light of ChatGPT. This presentation was given as part of the TILTAL forum on GPT and ELT. The full forum can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMTC2aTRYGg
GPT and ELT: Productive, Disruptive, or Destructive (Paul Raine)
Introduction to GPT and ELT
In this section, the speaker introduces GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) and ELT (English Language Teaching), explaining what they are and their relationship.
What is GPT?
- GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer.
- It is a large language model trained on gigabytes or terabytes of text using billions of parameters.
- Its goal is to predict the next word in a text string.
What can GPT do?
- It can generate human-like text, be fine-tuned for various language tasks such as translation, summarization, question answering, etc.
- It can generate grammatically accurate and stylistically authentic content that is often indistinguishable from human-authored content.
What is ELT?
- ELT stands for English Language Teaching.
- It refers to both an academic field and an industry related to teaching English as a foreign language.
Productive, Disruptive or Destructive?
In this section, the speaker discusses how GPT could impact ELT in productive, disruptive or destructive ways.
How will GPT impact ELT?
- The speaker believes that GPT will definitely have a disruptive impact on ELT.
- Possible productive uses of GPT in ELT include its ability to generate personalized content for learners and provide instant feedback on writing assignments.
- Possible destructive uses of GPT in ELT include replacing human teachers with AI-generated content.
Monetizing Chat GPT
The speaker discusses how OpenAI may be looking to monetize their multi-billion dollar investment from Microsoft and introduces the unique feature of Chat GPT that allows users to modify the output they receive.
Unique Feature of Chat GPT
- Chat GPT remembers what the user has said earlier in the conversation, allowing for follow-up corrections.
- It is trained to decline inappropriate requests.
- Users wanted to interact with language models in a conversational way and modify the output they received, which is what Chat GPT does uniquely well compared to other models.
Productive Uses of GPT
The speaker gives examples of productive uses of GPT, including generating factual passages suitable for English language learners and multiple choice comprehension questions.
Factual Passages for Language Learners
- Users can request a short factual passage about a topic suitable for English language learners.
- Chat GPT produces grammatically accurate and stylistically appropriate responses based on user instructions.
- If the passage is too difficult, users can request simplified grammar and vocabulary.
Writing in Different Styles
- Users can request that Chat GPT write something in the style of a well-known author incorporated into its model.
- Examples include Douglas Adams and Stephen King.
Multiple Choice Comprehension Questions
- Users can generate multiple choice comprehension questions based on a given passage.
Generating Vocabulary Activities with Chat GPT
The speaker discusses how Chat GPT can be used to generate vocabulary activities and produce passages about herbivores, animals, plants, habitats, and animals living together. However, the tool can sometimes mix up the questions.
- Chat GPT can be used to generate vocabulary activities.
- The tool can sometimes mix up the questions.
Potential Disruptive Uses of Chat GPT
The speaker discusses how chat GPT could potentially be disruptive or destructive if students use it inappropriately. For example, students could use it to write essays for them instead of doing it themselves.
- Students could use chat GPT to write essays for them instead of doing it themselves.
- Open AI is constantly making little tweaks to chat GPT and sometimes rejects requests to write badly because bad grammar is considered immoral by the tool.
- Plagiarism is a concern when using chat GPT. Schools may need to change their policies regarding receiving help from artificial intelligence.
Using Chat GPT to Write Imperfect Passages
The speaker demonstrates how chat GPT can be instructed to produce imperfect passages that contain grammatical and lexical errors. This feature helps prevent teachers from suspecting that a student has used AI assistance.
- Chat GPT can be instructed to produce imperfect passages with grammatical and lexical errors.
- A passage produced by chat GPT containing mistakes may not be suspected as having been written by AI.
Dealing with Plagiarism from Chat GPT
The speaker discusses how schools can deal with the threat of plagiarism from chat GPT in the same way they have always dealt with it. For example, by having students do written exams in test conditions.
- Schools can deal with the threat of plagiarism from chat GPT in the same way they have always dealt with it.
- Schools may need to change their policies regarding receiving help from artificial intelligence.
OpenAI and GPT Detection
The speaker discusses concerns about chatbots using GPT technology to cheat on assignments. They mention a tool called gpt0 that can detect whether a text has come from chat GPT or not.
Using OpenAI and gpt0 to Detect Chatbot Cheating
- Paste text into OpenAI to determine if it came from chat GPT.
- Use gpt0 to analyze passages based on burstiness and perplexity.
- If the burstiness and perplexity are not sufficiently bursty and perplexed, gpt0 will determine that it was written by AI.
- The speaker recommends trying out gpt0 if concerned about chatbot cheating.
Enhancing Language Learning with Chat GPT
The speaker discusses how chat GPT could potentially enhance the language learning process by helping students develop communicative competence.
Developing Communicative Competence with Chat GPT
- Language learning requires grammatical competence, social linguistic competence, discourse competence, and strategic competence.
- Chat GPT could be a "more knowledgeable other" that helps students reach a higher level of language proficiency.
