Hand Bell Manufacturing Process
The process of manufacturing hand bells involves intricate steps such as creating molds, pouring molten bronze, shaping the bells, tuning them for the correct sound, and finally assembling them with clappers.
Creating Molds and Pouring Bronze
- Sand molds are created by compacting special sand in a two-piece container.
- After filling the top part of the container with sand, molten bronze is poured into the mold once it reaches 1200 degrees Celsius.
Shaping and Cleaning the Bells
- Vibrators and hammers are used to release the bells from the sand mold.
- The bells are then cleaned using high-pressure air to remove any debris.
Tuning and Finishing
- The interior and exterior shapes of the bell are replicated on paper for tuning purposes.
- Workers use fine sandpaper to polish the bell's surface before testing its sound quality with a strobe tuner and human ear.
Final Assembly
- Once tuned perfectly, bells undergo final polishing before being engraved for customers.
