How to Pass a Soccer Ball with the Inside of Your Foot

Introduction to Passing Techniques

  • Jared MZ introduces himself as a former pro and founder of online socceracademy.com, focusing on teaching how to pass a soccer ball using the inside of the foot.
  • The training video is aimed at players aged 5 to 8, but techniques can be applied across all ages.

Basic Key Points for Passing

  • Ankle Position: Ensure your passing foot's ankle is locked and tight, similar to holding a bat firmly when hitting a baseball.
  • Toe Position: Keep the toe of your kicking foot pointed up rather than down to increase surface area contact with the ball.
  • Plant Foot Orientation: The non-kicking (plant) foot should face towards the target for accurate passing.

Initial Exercise for Practicing Technique

  • Players should practice passing with a partner or against a fence for one to two minutes, concentrating on proper technique.
  • Coaches are encouraged to observe and provide feedback on players' technique adjustments during practice.

Advanced Key Points for Effective Passing

  • Shoulder Alignment: Players must ensure their shoulders face the target; misalignment often leads to inaccurate passes.
  • Generating Power: Emphasize that power comes from bringing the leg back before swinging forward, akin to how golfers swing their clubs.
  • Thigh vs. Calf Power: Focus on using thigh muscles rather than just calf muscles; this helps in driving through effectively while keeping knees stable.

Additional Exercises and Troubleshooting

  • An exercise involves having players pause after stepping toward the ball, ensuring correct posture (thigh back, knee down).
  • If passes go astray, check shoulder alignment; poor power generation usually indicates reliance on calves instead of thighs.
  • Proper positioning behind the ball is crucial; players should step forward correctly to enhance power and accuracy in their passes.

Passing in soccer with the inside of your foot involves a lot of technique. Watch the basic and advanced key points in this soccer training video. This OSA soccer training video is geared for soccer players 5-8 years old and their coaches and parents. It of course can be applied to all ages. Key Points: 1. Ankle Locked 2. Passing foot Toe Up not Down (create more surface area on ball) 3. Plant foot facing your Target Exercise Soccer Player Can Do: Pass with your partner focusing on technique. Do this for 1-2 minutes. Coaches look for technique adjustments. Advanced Key Points: 1. Shoulders face target Players tend to step to the ball, turn their body which now means their shoulders are facing away from target and plant foot is now away from the target. We need to fix this. Try holding their shoulders when they pass to force this. It's awkward for players at first to pass with correct technique because there bodies aren't naturally set up to move like this. 2. Power comes from bringing leg back Players tend to push the ball when they are passing. Think of a golfer, do they take their club and hit a ball with out bringing their club back? No, same in soccer. The players leg needs to come back, generating power in the leg swing. 3. Power comes from Thigh, not calve. Lots of players just move their knee down when passing. This is incorrect. The power is in the thigh so the knee down stays the same and it is the thigh that comes back and generates the power. Exercise Soccer Player Can Do: Have player stand behind the ball about one step away from it. Step to the ball, pause, showing leg back, ankle locked, toe up and swing through with power, and pause once they've hit the ball. Then repeat. This will help focus on technique. Then once player is getting more comfortable return to passing normally with out pausing through out the technique. What Player Could Be Doing Wrong: If the pass is going all over the place that typically means their shoulders are not facing the target. Almost 90 percent of the time if a player makes a pass off target if you have them pause they will see their shoulders are facing right where the soccer ball went. If player is not generating enough power it is because their thigh isn't getting back enough. Remember, using your knee down for power is not correct. If their thigh stays in line with their non kicking foot, that is not correct. Make sure they step, legs open up, thigh is back so they can come through, this will generate more power.
