Scaffolding a Novel: Building Your Story Framework

Introduction to Scaffolding in Writing

  • The speaker introduces the concept of scaffolding, comparing it to construction, where temporary structures support building efforts.
  • Emphasizes that just as scaffolding is essential for constructing a safe house, having a structured plan is crucial for writing a novel.

Key Aspects of Novel Writing

  • Lists important aspects to consider when writing a novel: characters, locations, plot, style, voice, and timeline.
  • Highlights the importance of world-building in genres like fantasy and sci-fi.

Creating the Synopsis

  • Discusses starting with a synopsis as the foundation for scaffolding; suggests aiming for around 1,000 words for better AI assistance.
  • Notes that initial entries in the codex are empty and need to be filled out before writing begins.

Filling Out the Codex

Adding Genre and Characters

  • Demonstrates how to add story genre (e.g., Western) into the codex.
  • Uses AI prompts to extract character details from the synopsis and create descriptions of each character.

Locations and Plots

  • Extracts location information from the synopsis using AI prompts; emphasizes creativity in descriptions.
  • Creates main plots and subplots based on synopsis input; allows deletion of unwanted subplots afterward.

World-Building and Style Guide

  • Describes how to generate world-building details using AI prompts tailored to the story's context.
  • Develops an authentic style guide by asking AI for recommendations based on the synopsis.

Timeline Creation

  • Constructs a timeline outlining key events in the story; encourages creativity while structuring narrative flow.

Video description

Writing a novel is a serious endeavor. Before you start to write there are aspects you need to think through. Like characters, settings, plot, etc. Together these aspects provide a scaffolding for your novel. When you have the scaffolding, your writing will be easier and you will finish your novel in less time. The idea for the method I describe here, is partly due to Rachel Aaron, from her book "2k to 10k: Writing Faster, Writing Better, and Writing More of What You Love". In her book Aaron describes how she, with a few changes, boosted her daily writing from 2000 words to over 10,000 a day. And the changes she did was that she did the scaffolding before she started to write.
