How to Level an Uneven Floor with Self-Leveling Mortar

- Leveling an uneven floor is straightforward using self-leveling mortar, which is a crucial step before installing most types of flooring.
Required Tools and Materials
- Essential tools include:
- Repair mortar
- Masking tape
- Bonding primer
- Self-leveling mortar
- Brush, trowel, long straightedge, bubble level, pencil, glue brush, two buckets, drill mixer attachment, float, hammer, chisel, and vacuum cleaner.
Preparing the Surface for Repair
- If the edges of cracks are brittle:
- Break them up using a chisel and hammer.
- Vacuum thoroughly afterward.
- Protect surrounding wall bases with wide masking tape.
Identifying Irregularities in the Floor
- Use a straightedge with a bubble level to find irregular areas on the floor:
- Mark these spots with a thick pencil or marker.
Applying Repair Mortar
- For repairing cracks:
- Moisten them with a brush to enhance adhesion.
- Use repair mortar for larger cracks; spread it along the crack and press down firmly with the trowel's edge.
- For finer cracks, use repair putty instead.
Priming and Mixing Self-Leveling Mortar
- Check if priming is necessary by sprinkling water on the surface:
- If absorbed within one minute, apply bonding primer after waiting for at least 24 hours post-crack repairs.
- Prepare leveling compound according to package instructions before application.
Application Process of Self-Leveling Compound
- Start pouring from the farthest corner of the room towards the door:
- Pour gently into marked areas needing fill while spreading immediately using a trowel in sweeping motions.
