How Does a Speaker Work?
Mechanism of Sound Production
- The speaker contains a coil situated within a permanent magnet. When an alternating electric current flows through the coil, it generates magnetic variations that cause attraction and repulsion between the magnets.
- This magnetic action forces the cone, which supports the coil, to oscillate back and forth. The vibrations from the thin walls of the cone accelerate surrounding air, producing sound waves.
- The volume of sound generated is directly proportional to the amplitude variation of the electrical signal; greater amplitude results in louder sound.
- Additionally, higher frequencies of vibration produce sharper sounds emitted by the speaker.
