Parts of Plants
Root Functions
- The root is located underground and serves as the plant's support system. It absorbs water and mineral salts essential for growth.
Stem Characteristics
- Stems provide stability to plants and transport absorbed water and minerals from roots throughout the plant. They also distribute food produced during photosynthesis.
- Stems can branch out; herbaceous stems are thin, soft, flexible, and green, typical of herbs, while woody stems are hard and rigid, known as trunks in trees.
Leaf Structure and Function
- Leaves emerge from the stem and contain chlorophyll, giving them a green color. Their primary functions include respiration and photosynthesis.
- Leaves vary in shape and edge characteristics; they consist of two main parts: the petiole (connecting leaf to stem) and the lamina (the flat part of the leaf).
Seasonal Changes in Leaves
- In autumn, reduced light affects photosynthesis; leaves lose chlorophyll leading to color changes before falling off. This process highlights seasonal adaptations in plants.
