How Are Colored Pencils Made?
Composition of Colored Pencil Core
- The core of a colored pencil does not contain traditional lead; instead, it is made up of mineral pigments and binding agents.
- Each color corresponds to a specific recipe of pigments, meticulously combined in large batches to ensure consistency.
Manufacturing Process
- A secret mixture of gums, resins, or waxes is added to the boiled water and preservatives, creating a paste that expands when mixed with the pigments.
- The paste is processed into fine pieces that intensify the color before being compressed into a continuous strand resembling the pencil's core.
Finalizing the Pencil Core
- The long strands are cut to size but are initially unable to write until they undergo a coating process with chemical waxes that enhance color application on paper.
Quality Control Measures
- Random samples undergo quality control tests for resistance and durability, ensuring each pencil can draw 100 meters without failure.
Assembly and Finishing Touches
- Cedar wood is used for the pencil bodies; grooves are carved for inserting cores, followed by gluing and layering another grooved board on top.
