The Reality of Sex Trafficking

Introduction to L's Story

  • A 15-year-old girl, referred to as L, called the police after being assaulted by her 26-year-old pimp for not securing payment from a client.
  • L escaped from her pimp's moving car and was found by police in minimal clothing, indicating her vulnerable state.
  • It was revealed that L had been advertised online for sex since running away from home, highlighting the local nature of sex trafficking.

Understanding Human Trafficking

  • Andy Hall introduces himself as an anti-trafficking advocate and outlines his intention to discuss human trafficking, myths about prostitution, and potential solutions.
  • Human trafficking is identified as a major international crime with profits exceeding $150 billion annually; millions are victims globally.
  • Two main types of human trafficking are defined: labor trafficking and sex trafficking, with the latter often involving forced prostitution.

Legal Definitions and Misconceptions

  • Under federal law, any prostitution induced by force or involving minors is classified as sex trafficking.
  • Distinction between human smuggling (voluntary illegal border crossing) and human trafficking (involuntary slavery).

Quiz on Victims of Sex Trafficking

  • A quiz illustrates that various individuals can be victims of sex trafficking under federal law regardless of their circumstances or self-identification.
  • All options presented in the quiz were confirmed as victims due to factors like coercion or being minors.

Debunking Myths About Prostitution

Common Misconceptions

  • The stereotype of high-class call girls is challenged; most individuals in prostitution are victims rather than empowered entrepreneurs.
  • A survey conducted by survivor Beth showed over 99% of respondents met the legal definition of sex trafficking victim.

Age and Voluntariness in Prostitution

  • The average age for entering prostitution in Arizona is alarmingly low at 14 to 15 years old, complicating claims of voluntary participation.

Nature of Prostitution Today

Current Trends

  • Most prostitution occurs online rather than on streets; many buyers are married men seeking anonymity during work hours.
  • Prostitution is characterized as dangerous work with a significantly reduced life expectancy for those involved.

Violence Against Prostituted Individuals

  • Statistics reveal high rates of physical and sexual assault among women in prostitution; psychological abuse is also prevalent.

Understanding Johns' Motivations

Power Dynamics in Prostitution

  • Johns seek power over others rather than just sexual encounters; this highlights the underlying issues within commercialized sexual interactions.

Addressing Solutions

Legalization Debate

  • Arguments for legalizing prostitution suggest it could improve conditions for workers but lack empirical support based on past experiences.

Case Studies: Netherlands & Germany

  • In countries where legalization occurred (e.g., Netherlands), there was an increase in demand leading to higher rates of sex trafficking.

Sweden's Approach

  • Sweden’s model legalizes selling but criminalizes buying sex, effectively targeting demand while protecting sellers’ rights.

Conclusion: Advocating Change

Call to Action

  • Urges legislators to adopt models like Sweden’s that have shown success in reducing coercive sex trafficking while emphasizing that prostituted people are victims needing protection.

Video description

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Andy Hall, co-founder of Southern Arizona Against Slavery and law student at the University of Arizona presents human trafficking statistics, dispels prostitution myths, and offers a proposal to remedy this global issue. Andy Hall is a co-founder of Southern Arizona Against Slavery, a small local nonprofit fighting human trafficking. After creating an interdisciplinary undergraduate major about modern-day slavery, he began a JD program at the University of Arizona College of Law, where he is focusing on anti-trafficking law and policy. He has assisted survivors of human trafficking with legal matters ranging from immigration assistance to expungement of the wrongful prostitution convictions of sex trafficking victims. He has also been involved with an innovative Tucson program that equips prostituted people with holistic resources to empower them to exit prostitution, in sharp contrast to traditional prostitution enforcement. After graduation, Andy hopes to work for a nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive legal services to survivors of sex trafficking and labor trafficking. He is happily married to Chelsea.
