Northbridge
What are the North and South Bridges in Motherboards?
Overview of Chipsets
- The North Bridge, also known as "puente norte" or "North Beach," is one of two main chips in the logical chipset of a motherboard, with the other being the South Bridge ("puente sur").
- The term "North Bridge" refers to its position at the top of ATX format motherboards, controlling communication between key components like CPU, RAM, and PCI Express.
Functionality and Compatibility
- The North Bridge manages data flow between the CPU and RAM as well as graphics processing units (GPUs), while typically only supporting one or two types of memory.
- Specific chipsets can support different types of RAM; for instance, Intel's 845 chipset works with Pentium 4 and Celeron processors using either SDRAM or DDR2. In contrast, Intel's 875 chipset supports higher clock speeds with DDR RAM.
