How to make a Population Pyramid
Population Pyramid Construction
Understanding the Population Pyramid
- A population pyramid, also known as an age-sex pyramid, visually represents the distribution of various age groups and genders within a specific population.
- The example used is based on census data from the United States in 2010, illustrating how populations can be represented using either raw numbers or percentages.
Drawing the Population Pyramid
- The vertical y-axis will be drawn in the center of the page, with older age categories at the top and younger ones at the bottom, typically organized in five-year intervals.
- The horizontal x-axis is divided into two sections: one for males (left side) and one for females (right side), both labeled with percentage figures starting from zero where axes intersect.
Scaling and Coloring
- A scale of one centimeter equals one percent is established; this is based on the largest percentage group (3.7% for females aged 45 to 49).
