Understanding Matter
Everything in the universe is composed of matter, which includes air, food, stones, clouds, stars, plants, animals, and even small particles like water droplets or sand.
By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to identify types of matter and understand how states can change through temperature or pressure.
Types and States of Matter
Characteristics of Particles
Matter consists of particles called molecules; for example, sand is made up of sand particles.
The three primary states of matter are solid (fixed shape and volume), liquid (fixed volume but no fixed shape), and gas (neither fixed shape nor volume).
Effects of Temperature
Increasing temperature raises kinetic energy: solids can turn into liquids (fusion), and liquids can turn into gases (vaporization).
Conversely, cooling can revert gases to liquids (condensation) or liquids to solids.
Advanced States of Matter
Beyond Traditional States
There are seven known states of matter; plasma is the fourth state above gas and consists of ionized gas with free electrons.
The fifth state is a beam where particles move harmoniously in one direction. The lowest state is Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC).
