Prokaryotic Growth and Cell Division
Overview of Prokaryotic Growth
- Prokaryotic growth is dependent on the rate at which cell numbers increase, primarily through cell division.
- This process is known as asexual reproduction, requiring only one parent, resulting in offspring that are exact genetic copies of the original DNA.
Mechanism of Cell Division
- Each instance of cell division results in double the number of cells, leading to exponential growth; thus, few prokaryotes can rapidly multiply into many.
- The largest group within prokaryotes is bacteria, which typically divide through a method called binary fission.
Steps in Binary Fission
- The first step involves the bacterial cell growing to its maximum size before initiating chromosome replication.
- During replication, two identical copies of the DNA molecule are formed. The membrane expands while chromosomes attached to it are pulled apart.
- A new cell wall forms in the center of the cell, separating the two new DNA molecules. Subsequently, these two new cells can separate and begin growing again for another division cycle.
