UNIT IV Topic 2 Drug Abusers and Keeping Drug free
Substance Abuse and Education: Understanding Drug Abusers
Overview of Drug Abuse
- Drug abuse is defined as the improper use of legal or illegal substances, which may include taking higher doses than prescribed or using someone else's medication.
- Individuals may abuse drugs to enhance mood, relieve stress, or escape reality; however, many can change their habits and stop using drugs altogether.
Classifications of Drug Abusers
Experimenters
- Experimenters are individuals who try drugs for the experience but may transition into occasional users with continued use.
Occasional Users
- Occasional users consume drugs during social events but may begin to plan their drug use around these occasions, leading to impulsive decisions.
Regular Users
- Regular users take drugs approximately three to four times a week and often develop rituals surrounding their drug intake. They might miss work or school due to drug effects.
Progression Towards Dependence
Drug Dependent Users
- These individuals use drugs almost daily (five to seven times a week), developing tolerance where they need increasing amounts of the substance for the same effect.
Types of Dependence
- Drug Tolerance:
- Increased dosage is required over time to achieve desired effects due to tolerance buildup.
- Physical Dependence:
- Withdrawal symptoms occur when not using the drug, ranging from mild cravings to severe pain.
- Psychological Dependence:
- Cravings driven by mental needs rather than physical withdrawal; some cannot perform daily tasks without being under the influence.
Severe Consequences of Drug Abuse
- Inverse scenarios lead to mental health issues where users exhibit psychotic symptoms like hallucinations and delusions due to uncontrolled substance use.
- Users continue despite negative consequences affecting personal relationships and overall functionality; they often engage in criminal activities related to their addiction.
Countermeasures for Substance Abuse
Prevention Strategies
- Abstainers:
- Those who have never tried drugs should receive preventive education about potential risks associated with drug usage.
- Experimenters & Occasional Users:
- Counseling is essential; loved ones should help them recognize the impact of drug use before seeking professional help.
- Regular & Dependent Users:
- Require structured rehabilitation programs for strict monitoring and support in overcoming addiction challenges.
