Database Users

Database Users

Types of Database Users

In this video, the different types of database users are discussed. The two main categories of database users are actors on the scene and workers behind the scene. Actors on the scene are people whose jobs involve using large databases every day, while workers behind the scene maintain the database system environment.

Actors on the Scene

Database Administrators

  • Responsible for administering or managing primary and secondary resources.
  • Authorized access to the database.
  • Coordinating and monitoring use of database.
  • Acquiring hardware and software resources as needed.

Database Designers

  • Identify data to store in database.
  • Choose appropriate structures to represent and store data.
  • Develop views for each group of users based on their requirements.

End Users

Casual End User

  • Accesses database occasionally for querying or updating data.

Workers Behind the Scene

System Designers and Implementers

  • Responsible for designing, developing, and operating the database system environment.

Tool Developers

  • Develop tools that help with maintaining and operating a database system environment.

Operators and Maintenance Personnel

  • Maintain a healthy environment by performing regular maintenance tasks such as backups, updates, etc.

Types of Database Users

In this section, the speaker discusses the different types of database users and their roles.

End Users

  • Casual end users and Nav or Parametric end users are not familiar with DBMS facilities. Sophisticated end-users are experts in DBMS facilities to satisfy their requirements. Standalone users maintain personal databases using ready-made program packages.
  • System analysis and application programmers determine the requirements of the end-users, design canned transactions, and develop specifications for standard types of queries. Application programmers test, debug, document, and maintain these canned transactions that are developed by system analysts.

Workers Behind The Scene

  • System designers and implementers design and implement DBMS modules and interfaces as one software package. Tool developers design and implement tools which can be purchased separately to help improve the performance of a database system. Operators and maintenance personnel are responsible for running and maintaining hardware/software of the database system environment.

With this, we come to the end of this video where we discussed different types of database users based on their roles in a database management system environment.
