Introduction to Vector Calculus

In this section, Jeff Chasnov, a professor of mathematics, introduces the concept of vector calculus and its importance in solving problems as an engineer. He explains that vector calculus expands the world of a single variable to three dimensions.

What is Vector Calculus?

  • Vector calculus is sometimes called multivariable calculus or calculus three.
  • It involves the algebra of vectors and how to represent these vectors in different coordinate systems.
  • Engineers use vector calculus to solve problems related to fluid flows and electromagnetic waves.
  • Examples include understanding how cell phone towers radiate electromagnetic waves and how cars, planes, rockets, ships, and submarines operate in fluids like air and water.

Course Organization

  • Lectures will be given on a lightboard so that students can see the mathematics being explained directly by the professor.
  • After each lecture, students will be given practice problems to solve.
  • After each topic covered in class, students will take a practice quiz.
