What Are Chemical Bonds?
Overview of Chemical Bonds
- Chemical bonds are the attractive forces that hold atoms together in a compound. There are two main types: ionic and covalent bonds.
Ionic Bonds
- An ionic bond occurs when one atom donates or transfers electrons to another atom, resulting in the formation of charged ions.
- The atom that loses electrons becomes positively charged, while the atom that gains electrons becomes negatively charged.
- The attraction between these oppositely charged ions forms the ionic bond. For example, chloride ion (Cl-) attracts sodium ion (Na+) to create sodium chloride (table salt).
Covalent Bonds
- Covalent bonds form when atoms share their electrons instead of transferring them completely.
- A simple example is water (H2O), where each hydrogen atom shares its electron with oxygen.
