Seguridad en el laboratorio de química general
Safety in the Chemistry Laboratory
Importance of Proper Attire
- When attending chemistry lab classes, students must wear closed-toe shoes that cover the instep, preferably made of leather.
- Long pants without holes are required, ideally denim, to protect legs and feet from hazardous substances.
Prohibited Items and Practices
- Sandals, shorts, leggings, or sports uniforms are strictly prohibited for safety reasons.
- Long hair must be tied back; a cautionary tale is shared about a student whose loose hair caught fire due to negligence.
Jewelry and Eye Protection
- Wearing large earrings, necklaces, rings, or bracelets is not allowed in the lab; only watches may be worn.
- Safety goggles with side protection are mandatory to shield eyes from splashes; if regular glasses are worn, safety goggles should be placed over them.
Lab Coats and Hygiene Protocol
- A buttoned white lab coat made of cotton (not synthetic materials due to flammability risks) must be worn at all times.
- Eating, drinking, or chewing gum in the laboratory is forbidden to prevent chemical contamination. Students should wash hands thoroughly after class.
