Shoulder Bandaging Techniques
Introduction to Shoulder Bandaging
- The video discusses the principles of shoulder bandaging, emphasizing the importance of considering a person's morphology when applying a bandage.
- Different body shapes may require different starting points for bandaging; for instance, individuals with a narrow waist and wider pelvis should start at the pelvic area.
Positioning and Initial Steps
- The recommended resting position for shoulder bandaging is with the arm bent and hand crossed over the chest. Fixation begins on the side opposite to the injured shoulder. For example, if the right shoulder is injured, start on the left side.
- Due to the long length of the bandage, fewer layers are used; thus, it’s crucial to apply tension for effective immobilization without cutting off circulation.
Bandage Application Process
- After securing a loop around the arm, bring the bandage under and around the elbow before moving back up towards the shoulder in a diagonal manner. This process involves repeating guidelines consistently throughout application.
- Care must be taken regarding where to place tension; if closer to the shoulder, ensure that it also moves towards the hand to prevent slippage or loosening of turns made near more vertical surfaces like elbows.
Final Adjustments and Checks
- Once all fixing turns are completed, eliminate any wrinkles in the bandage while maintaining appropriate tension throughout its length for effective handling and immobilization. Ensure that most of it remains horizontal rather than vertical to avoid sliding downwards from its intended position.
- To secure properly, use adhesive tape or hooks if available; check that mobility is limited at both outward and lateral movements from the shoulder joint as an indicator of correct application. A well-applied bandage will restrict movement significantly from this point onward.
