Preparation of a 0.01 Molar Copper Sulfate Solution

Weighing the Copper Sulfate

  • To prepare a 0.01 molar solution, weigh out 2.4968 grams of copper sulfate; due to balance limitations, round to 2.50 grams for accuracy.

Using the Balance

  • Place a watch glass on the balance and tare it to zero before adding the substance. Use a spatula to gradually transfer copper sulfate until reaching the desired weight.

Handling Larger Quantities

  • For larger amounts, use larger spatulas while maintaining cleanliness and precision in measurement. If overshooting weight, remove excess; if underweight, carefully add more substance until correct weight is achieved.

Transferring Substance

  • Once weighed, transfer all copper sulfate into a beaker using a spatula and tap gently on the watch glass to ensure complete transfer of material.

Dissolving Copper Sulfate

  • Rinse any remaining residue from the watch glass with distilled water into the beaker and fill it adequately with distilled water for dissolution; additional water can be added directly if needed.

Agitation for Dissolution

  • Use a clean stirring rod (rinsed with distilled water) to stir the mixture until all copper sulfate is completely dissolved; this may take several minutes depending on quantity used. Clean stirring rod after use with distilled water before transferring contents to an Erlenmeyer flask.

Cleaning Up Residues

  • Carefully scrape any residues from the beaker's sides into the flask and rinse thoroughly up to three times with distilled water for complete transfer of materials into the volumetric flask.

Filling Volumetric Flask

  • Fill up to just below neck base of volumetric flask using either washing bottle or direct addition of distilled water; continue filling cautiously as you approach meniscus line for accurate volume measurement at eye level using a pipette or dropper for final adjustments until meniscus aligns correctly at calibration mark on flask neck.
