Creation of the Universe and the Role of Saptarishis

The Creation Process by Brahma

  • Brahma created seven mind-born sons, known as Saptarishis, to protect Dharma and distribute Vedic knowledge across different realms.
  • Each of the Saptarishis has specific responsibilities assigned by Brahma, with a significant duty being the creation of Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons).

Birth of Devas and Asuras

  • Kashyapa Muni, one of the Saptarishis, had two wives: Aditi and Diti. From Aditi came various Devas like Indra, Varuna, and Surya; from Diti came Asuras like Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu.
  • The term "Asura" refers to beings who oppose or hate the gods. Those born from Diti are specifically called "Daityas."

The Mindset of Asuras

Nature of Daityas

  • Daityas constantly seek to defeat gods to establish their dominance over celestial realms.
  • Despite their efforts through generations, Daityas often face defeat at the hands of gods in battles.

Tarakasura's Ambition

Quest for Immortality

  • Tarakasura becomes weary hearing about his ancestors' defeats against gods and decides he must achieve supremacy over them.
  • He contemplates performing penance to gain boons that would ensure his victory over the gods.

Seeking Brahma's Boon

  • Tarakasura initially considers seeking Shiva’s blessings but realizes Shiva is in deep meditation due to his grief over Sati's death.
  • Instead, he chooses to perform penance for Brahma in a dense forest for many years.

Brahma Grants a Boon

Request for Immortality

  • After observing Tarakasura's devotion, Brahma appears before him and asks what boon he desires.
  • Tarakasura requests immortality; however, Brahma explains that such a boon contradicts cosmic law since birth and death are part of creation.

The Clever Request

Conditional Immortality

  • Unable to obtain true immortality, Tarakasura cleverly asks that only Shiva’s son can kill him.

Consequences of the Boon

Rise in Power

  • With this new power granted by Brahma, Tarakasura begins terrorizing both Devas and other beings.

Devas Seek Help from Brahma

Intervention Required

  • The Devas approach Brahma regarding Tarakasura’s tyranny caused by his newfound powers after receiving his boon.

Manmatha's Role

Plan Against Tarakasura

  • To counteract Tarakasura’s threat, Manmatha (the god of love), is summoned to create distractions for Shiva so he may marry Parvati again.

Parvati's Penance

Devotion Towards Shiva

  • Parvati engages in intense penance near Mount Kailash to win back Lord Shiva’s affection after her previous incarnation as Sati.

Birth of Kartikeya

Divine Birth

  • After several divine events involving fire energy transforming into six children cared for by Krittikas , they merge into one child with six heads known as Kartikeya or Skanda.

Kartikeya vs. Surapadman
