Reflections on Language and Identity

The Perception of Language in the Philippines

  • Speaking pure English can lead to perceptions of elitism or wealth in certain areas of the Philippines.
  • The speaker identifies as not fitting this stereotype, choosing to communicate in Taglish instead.

Personal Growth and Rule-Breaking

  • The speaker recalls a childhood experience of being awarded "most outstanding student" but feeling constrained by rules.
  • A significant turning point occurs in July 2024 when the speaker breaks away from their comfort zone by going on a road trip with new acquaintances.

Journey Begins: Road Trip Adventures

Meeting New Friends

  • The road trip involves traveling from Manila to San Juan, taking about four hours, with friends Mark and Paolo, whom the speaker is meeting for the first time.
  • Voo, the designated driver and best friend, joins them for this adventure.

Bittersweet Beginnings

  • Upon arriving at Lon Yon, despite it being sunny, rain falls unexpectedly—symbolizing mixed emotions about starting this journey.
  • The speaker expresses an early fear of the trip ending before it truly begins.

Discovering Baguio: A Sense of Belonging

Arrival in Baguio

  • Baguio feels colder compared to Lon Yon; however, it evokes feelings of nostalgia and connection with newfound friends.
  • The experience is described as a safe space where they can share personal achievements and ideas without judgment.

Reflection on Self-Acceptance

  • Growing up feeling high-fated led the speaker to hide their creations; now they feel fortunate for finding supportive friendships that encourage self-expression.

Embracing Vulnerability Through Music

Expressive Moments

  • Lyrics reflect themes of existence and overcoming fears; music serves as an outlet for expressing complex emotions during the trip.

Final Memories Before Returning Home

Last Meal Together

  • Before heading back to Manila, they have lunch at Joseph's (Laperral White House), which has historical significance as a haunted location built in the 1920s.

Reflecting on Connections Made

  • As they return home, there's a sense of sadness about leaving behind these new friendships while acknowledging that memories will remain cherished despite returning to their individual lives.

Future Paths Diverging

  • After their time together ends, Mark returns to Singapore while Paolo heads off to Switzerland; meanwhile, the speaker reflects on continuing their creative pursuits back home amidst these changes.

Last July 2024, I went on a roadtrip with two creators I met on the internet. We travelled across La Union to Baguio and met people I didn't expect at the end of the trip. --- Paolo, Mark, and Miki met on the internet when "filmtok" had just emerged in late 2023. After following each other on the internet, we exchanged messages, me and Mark had met up prior, Paolo said he was coming home to Manila, and it led to this trip. During Paolo's last days here, we had posted a creator hangout on Instagram and see who would come.
