HISTORIA DEL BALONCESTO (Origen y Evolución)
History of Basketball
Origins of Basketball
- The history of basketball began in 1891 at the YMCA school in Springfield, Massachusetts, where physical education director Luther Gulick tasked James Naismith with creating an indoor sport to combat harsh winter conditions.
- Naismith aimed to address the lack of engaging physical activities for students, as existing methods were dull and unappealing, leading to low interest in physical education classes.
- Drawing inspiration from a childhood game called "Duck on a Rock," Naismith designed a new game using peach baskets and a ball to encourage youth participation in sports without the rough contact typical of other games.
Development of the Game
- Initially, Naismith had 18 students divided into two teams of nine players each; this later evolved into the modern five-player format by 1896.
- The introduction of backboards was initially meant to prevent interference from spectators but eventually became crucial for executing rebounds and scoring plays.
Original Rules
- Naismith established 13 foundational rules for basketball. Key rules included:
- Ball can be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
- Players cannot run while holding the ball; they must throw it from their position.
- Physical contact like charging or pushing is prohibited and results in fouls.
Evolution and Expansion
- James Naismith played a significant role in promoting basketball's growth across the U.S. and Canada during the early 20th century.
- The first intercollegiate game occurred on February 9, 1895, between two universities, marking an important milestone in collegiate athletics.
History of Basketball and Its Evolution

- The basketball was showcased globally during the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, marking a significant moment for the sport.
International Developments in Basketball
- In 1932, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) was founded in Geneva, with member countries including Argentina, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Romania, and Switzerland.
- FIBA played a crucial role in integrating basketball into the Berlin Olympics of 1936.
Milestones in Women's Basketball
- The first men's World Championship took place in Argentina in 1950, where Argentina won the title.
- Three years later marked the inaugural women's World Championship held in Santiago de Chile.
