Transferring Bees from a Natural Hive to a Technified Hive
Initial Steps in the Transfer Process
- The process begins with locating a natural hive within a tree trunk and marking its position for accurate relocation.
- It is crucial to transport the hive without altering its original orientation to minimize stress on the bees.
Preparing the New Hive
- After opening the trunk, clean out the nest by removing any wax and debris to prepare for placement in the new hive.
- Care must be taken not to spill honey during this process, as it could attract pests like ants.
Handling the Bee Nest
- Use a curved spatula to gently lift out the entire brood comb, ensuring minimal damage while extracting it from its original location.
- Place remnants of propolis at the bottom of the new hive to create pathways for bee movement and prevent direct contact with the base.
Ensuring Bee Attraction and Nutrition
- Since this new hive has not been previously occupied, adding wax at the entrance is essential to attract bees.
- Propolis should be applied carefully where components will adhere together, ensuring structural integrity without damaging existing cells.
Feeding and Finalizing Setup
- Honey cannot be placed directly into the new hive due to space constraints; instead, it should be provided through small feeders made from bottle caps.
- Providing food such as pollen and honey is critical; failure to do so may lead to colony collapse due to lack of sustenance.
Completing the Transfer Process
- Once everything is set up with adequate food supply, place an excluder on top of the brood area for future division if necessary.
