La Eduteca - La reproducción asexual de las plantas
What is Plant Reproduction?
Types of Plant Reproduction
- Plants are living organisms that reproduce in two main ways: sexual and asexual reproduction.
- Asexual reproduction involves only one plant, while sexual reproduction requires two plants. In asexual reproduction, the offspring are genetically identical to the parent plant.
Mechanisms of Asexual Reproduction
- Various systems exist for asexual reproduction in plants, including:
- Stolons: Horizontal stems that grow above ground, producing roots and new plants at intervals.
- Rhizomes: Underground horizontal stems that emit shoots upwards to form new plants.
- Tubers: A type of rhizome that stores food; an example is the potato.
Applications of Asexual Reproduction
- The ability of plants to reproduce asexually is beneficial in agriculture.
- For instance, geraniums, grapevines, and roses can be propagated using cuttings (fragments of stems with buds). When planted, these cuttings develop roots and grow into new plants.
- Another method used is grafting, which involves joining a fragment from one plant onto another; the grafted part retains characteristics from its original plant despite being on a different host plant.
