Fotometer ialah alat untuk menangkap kekuatan cahaya atau interaksi cahaya yang ditransmisikan atau pengukuran berdasarkan cahaya dengan sumber radiasi elektromagnetik. Nama lain dari fotometer yang dipraktikumkan ialah Hospitex Diagnostic artinya instrument yang biasa digunakan pada rumah sakit yang menggunakan sample klinis misalnya serum darah. Komponen-komponen fotometer hampir sama dengan spektrofotometer meliputi sumber cahaya atau sumber radiasi yaitu lampu halogen, kemudian filter, tempat sample atau kuvet, detector ialah silicon, dan sample klinis yaitu serum darah. Prinsip kerja fotometer yaitu sampel yang telah diinkubasi kemudian disedotkan pada aspirator sehingga masuk ke dalam kuvet dan dibaca oleh sinar cahaya kemudian sampel akan disedot kembali dengan pompa peristaltik menuju ke pembuangan. Sampel yang digunakan harus dimasukkan dalam inkubator. Hal ini agar reagen-reagen dalam sampel bekerja secara maksimal.
