Billy Go’s Beginner Korean Course | #8: Learning 한글 Part 6 Diphthongs
Introduction to Diphthongs
In this lesson, we will learn about diphthongs in Korean. A diphthong is a combination of two vowels that are pronounced quickly. We will learn how to pronounce and write seven diphthongs in Korean.
Pronunciation of Diphthongs
- To pronounce a diphthong, say the first vowel on the left followed by the second vowel on the right quickly.
- Write diphthongs in their regular stroke order by writing the left vowel first and then writing the right vowel.
Seven Diphthongs in Korean
- The first diphthong is a combination of ㅡ and ㅣ, pronounced as ㅢ. It can be simplified to ㅣ when used with any other consonant except for empty consonant.
- The second diphthong is a combination of ㅗ and ㅏ, pronounced as ㅘ. When an empty consonant is added, it becomes 와.
- The third diphthong is a combination of ㅜ and ㅓ, pronounced as ㅝ. With an empty consonant added, it becomes 워.
- The fourth diphthong is a combination of ㅜ and ㅣ, pronounced as ㅟ. With an empty consonant added, it becomes 위.
- The fifth diphthong is a combination of ㅗ and ㅐ, originally pronounced as ㅗ+ᅢ but now written as ᄋ+ᅫ (왜). With an empty consonant added, it becomes 왜.
- The sixth diphthong is a combination of ㅜ and ㅔ, pronounced as ㅞ. With an empty consonant added, it becomes 웨.
- There are some exceptions with the pronunciation of diphthongs when used with certain consonants.
Practice
- Practice pronouncing the diphthongs by pausing the video and trying them on your own.
- Practice writing the diphthongs by completing the exercises provided in the video.
Names of Letters
- To make the name of each letter, take the consonant itself and attach the vowel ㅣ. Then attach the syllable 으, followed by that same consonant at the bottom. For example, 니은 (ㄴ) is made by taking it and attaching ㅣ to get 니. Then we attach the syllable 으, 니으, followed by that same syllable at the bottom again to get 니은.
Irregularities
- There are three irregular letters on this list: 기역 (ㄱ), 디귿 (ㄷ), and 시옷 (ㅅ).
- For vowels, add an empty consonant and read as usual.
- For double consonants, add 쌍 before each letter.
Conclusion
In this lesson we learned about seven diphthongs in Korean and how to pronounce and write them correctly. We also learned how to name each letter in Korean using a specific formula.
Overall, this lesson provides a good foundation for understanding Korean pronunciation and writing system through learning about diphthongs in Korean language.
