• The cinema was invented in 1895 by Louis and Auguste Lumière, two engineer brothers from Lyon, France. They were the first to project a film publicly using a machine they created.

• The Lumière brothers drew inspiration from various inventors while designing their machine. Early cinema owes much to photography, particularly with the introduction of flexible film in the 1880s.

• Thomas Edison, an American inventor, developed a camera and a viewing device in 1891 that quickly displayed images taken by the camera, creating an illusion of movement.

• In 1895, the Lumières improved upon earlier inventions by creating the cinématographe, which functioned as both a camera and projector. Their first public film screening featured workers leaving one of their factories.

• Among the audience was Georges Méliès, who was captivated by this spectacle and would go on to become one of the first filmmakers in fiction cinema. While not all films by the Lumières were considered art, their invention undeniably laid the groundwork for modern cinema.
