What Are Tissues?
Overview of Tissues
- A tissue is defined as a group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function. Histology is the science that studies these tissues in the body.
Types of Tissues
- There are four main types of tissues: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous.
Epithelial Tissue
- The primary role of epithelial tissue is to cover, protect, and limit external surfaces. A clear example is the skin.
- Epithelial tissue also lines internal cavities and organs within the body.
Connective Tissue
- Also known as connective tissue, it exists throughout the body with key functions including binding and connecting organs. Examples include adipose tissue, blood, bone tissue, and cartilage.
Muscular Tissue
- Muscular tissue consists of elongated cells called myocytes that contain actin and myosin proteins enabling contraction and expansion for bodily movements.
- There are three types of muscular tissue: smooth muscle (involuntary movement), striated muscle (attached to bones for voluntary movement), and cardiac muscle (forms the heart).
Nervous Tissue
- Nervous tissue comprises nerve cells (neurons) responsible for transmitting messages throughout the body. It detects signals, processes them, and generates nerve impulses in response.
