Territories of France Beyond Metropolitan Regions
- France includes not only metropolitan regions but also overseas territories, comprising 12 territories with varied statuses and around 2.6 million inhabitants.
- These territories consist of five overseas departments and regions (Guadeloupe, Guyane, Martinique, Mayotte, Réunion), four overseas collectivities (Wallis-et-Futuna, French Polynesia, Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy, Saint Pierre and Miquelon), New Caledonia, French Southern and Antarctic Lands, and Clipperton with different statuses.
- Overseas territories face various constraints such as exposure to natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and floods. Except for Guyane, these territories are islands or archipelagos characterized by significant distance from mainland France and the European space.
- Despite challenges, these constraints can turn into resources; for instance, attracting tourism. Infrastructure development aims at ensuring territorial continuity to provide equal services to all residents and reduce social disparities within these territories.
- Public and private actors collaborate in implementing developments in these areas. The state and the European Union play crucial roles. However, issues persist in French overseas territories including higher unemployment rates and living costs compared to mainland France.
