Billy Go’s Beginner Korean Course | #24: Intro to Adverbs

Introduction to Adverbs

In this lesson, we learn about adverbs and how they add description to verbs, phrases, or even other adverbs. We focus on using adverbs to describe verbs in Korean.

Examples of Adverbs in English

  • Adverbs add description to verbs, phrases, or even other adverbs.
  • Examples of adverbs in English include "quickly," "a lot," "often," and "well."

Using Adverbs in Korean

  • In Korean, we can use adverbs like 빨리 (quickly), 많이 (a lot), 자주 (often), and 잘 (well) to describe verbs.
  • For example:
  • 일을 하다 'to do work' + 빨리 = 빨리 일(을) 하다 'to work quickly'
  • 먹다 'to eat' + 많이 = 많이 먹다 'to eat a lot'
  • 공부를 하다 'to study' + 자주 = 자주 공부를 하다 'to study often'
  • 한국어를 하다 'to speak Korean' + 잘 = 한국어를 잘하다 'to speak Korean well'

Describing Other Adverbs

  • Adverbs can also be used to describe other adverbs.
  • Examples include 아주 (very), 조금 (a little/kind of) + 더 (more), and 더 (more) + 빨리 (quickly).

Conversation Practice with Adverbs

We listen to a conversation between two people practicing using adverbs in Korean.

Conversation Example

  • 찬곤 says 저는 한국어를 조금 해요. 'I speak a little Korean.'
  • 수현 replies 저는 한국어를 아주 잘해요. 'I speak Korean' 아주 잘 'very well.'
  • 찬곤 says 저는 조금 더 먹고 싶어요. 'I want to eat a little more.'
  • 수현 replies 저는 정말 빨리 먹어요. 'I eat' 정말 빨리 'really quickly.'

Using "Really" in Korean

  • The adverb "really" can be translated to either 정말 or 진짜.
  • Both can also be used with the verb 이다 (to be) to mean "Really" as a sentence.

Additional Notes on Adverbs

We learn additional information about using adverbs in Korean.

Placement of Adverbs

  • Adverbs in Korean are always used before whatever verb, phrase, or adverb they're describing, never after.
  • However, when using 하다 (to do) with nouns to form new verbs, you could use the adverb either before that entire verb or simply before the verb that you want to modify.

Making Your Own Adverbs

  • In future lessons, we will learn how to make our own adverbs using verbs.

Conclusion

  • This lesson is only meant to be an introduction to adverbs in Korean.
  • Practice everything learned in this lesson and stay tuned for future lessons on this topic.
