“I got hired to watch over a server that doesn’t exist…”

Introduction to the Server Watchdog

Initial Contact and Setup

  • The narrator introduces a server watchdog role, offering $4 per hour for monitoring a Minecraft server.
  • Cash, an interested player, logs onto the server despite not filling out any form or knowing how his email was used.

Exploring the Server Environment

  • Upon entering, Cash discovers that the server has been heavily griefed and he lacks necessary permissions like creative mode.
  • He finds a conversation board with goals indicating someone is expected to return soon, raising concerns about potential threats.

Cash's Observations and Realizations

Glitches and Time Synchronization

  • Cash notes that items are glitched and expresses confusion over their appearance without a texture pack.
  • He learns from the watchdog that the daylight cycle corresponds to real life, suggesting players might be in the same time zone.

Technical Challenges

  • As Cash increases his render distance to monitor the area better, his PC struggles to handle it effectively.

Unexpected Events During Monitoring

Mysterious Noises and Player Activity

  • After hearing an unusual sound (a goat horn), Cash realizes no players are online at that moment.
  • A new player joins under a generic username, heightening Cash's unease about unknown elements on the server.

Night Shift Challenges

Intrusion Warnings and Discoveries

  • Upon returning for another shift, Cash finds his previous pillar removed and receives a warning against intruding into blocks or items.
  • While searching through chests in a house, he discovers secret passageways connecting different areas of the server.

Cryptic Messages

  • In one of these hidden passages, he finds a book containing ominous warnings about deception related to an unidentified "him."

Exploring the Mysterious Server

Cash's Discovery of Changes on the Server

  • Cash returns to a signboard only to find all signs missing, indicating someone has been active on the server since his last login.
  • He writes a sign asking, "Hello, can anyone see this?" using yellow dye for visibility before continuing his exploration.

Encountering Technical Issues and Paranoia

  • After going AFK due to a distraction outside, Cash attempts to access the Nether but gets disconnected; he suspects it might be tactical nerfing rather than coincidence.
  • Upon logging back in, he receives a message from the Watchdog Protocol stating that his game mode has changed from survival to adventure mode.

Communication Attempts with an Unknown Player

  • Cash finds a response on a sign saying, "Yes, but who are you?" but cannot edit it due to being in adventure mode. He uses a book instead to communicate.
  • After placing his message in a bookshelf for potential retrieval by others, he anxiously waits for responses.

Unsettling Responses and Ghostly Presence

  • The reply reads: "You are what to watch over the server? Your typing is weird," leading Cash to clarify his role as an observer hired for the server.
  • The unknown player expresses distrust and requests Cash leave them alone after receiving further messages.

Investigating Further into the Server's Secrets

  • Despite typical indicators of player presence in Minecraft (like bubbles or particles), there are no signs of this mysterious player around.
  • Cash discovers an unsigned book in a hidden barrel containing unsettling text about feeling watched and paranoia.

Technical Glitches and Whitelisting Confusion

  • After experiencing game crashes, Cash mentions giving his friend the server IP; however, they can't log on due to whitelisting issues despite him not sharing his gamertag.
  • This raises questions about how he was whitelisted when previous interactions indicated no one knew him.

Utilizing Tools for Exploration

  • Returning underground tunnels leads him to discover an opening triggered by something unseen; he plans to use an X-ray shader pack for investigation.
  • Observing through shaders reveals a skulk sensor linked with door mechanisms that remain untriggered despite apparent activity.

Cash's Mysterious Encounter

Cash's Discovery and Corrupted Image

  • Cash describes seeing something outside his window and attempts to capture it in a photo, which turns out to be badly corrupted. He does not acknowledge the corruption, instead mentioning the presence of deer in his yard.

The Hallway and Unexpected Room

  • As Cash walks down a hallway, he demonstrates impressive reflexes when avoiding detection by a sensor. He enters a large room filled with books that contain strange pages.

Decoding the Text

  • Upon examining the first page of one book, Cash notes an abundance of 'X's and gibberish text. He suspects two encoding methods are layered over each other.
  • After researching, he realizes the text resembles Pig Latin rules where words end with "ow." Removing these allows for clearer understanding.
  • By shifting consonants from the end to the front of words, he decodes part of the message as "I'm a genius," indicating some form of practice code.

Analyzing Further Pages

  • Another decoded message reads: "Do you actually believe him? I think he's a hacker..." suggesting discussions about trust regarding Cash’s actions or identity.
  • A subsequent page reveals someone discussing their interaction with Cash, hinting at deeper connections and potential threats within their server environment.

Location Reset Mechanism

  • After being kicked off the server, Cash logs back on only to find his location resets every minute. This mechanic frustrates him as it limits exploration opportunities.
  • Despite this challenge, he decides to remain idle on the server for payment but later falls asleep during his shift.

Strange Occurrences in Gameplay

  • Upon logging back in, Cash notices texture changes when entering and exiting buildings but casually remarks "Wild" without further investigation into this anomaly.
  • Inside what appears to be a normal house, he discovers chests containing items rather than glitches. However, upon reaching an upper floor, he finds signs revealing personal frustrations about being excluded from group activities in-game.

Trust Issues with Information

  • The signs express feelings of abandonment related to gameplay dynamics; however, due to previous distortions encountered by Cash throughout his experience, there is skepticism about trusting this new information presented.

The Mysterious Events on the Minecraft Server

Unexplained Movements and Server Anomalies

  • The first instance of another player's movement is reported, accompanied by a door opening despite all doors being left unchanged by Cash.
  • Cash shares that he managed to access the normal server again, where he checked a chest before being logged out. He captures two screenshots with cryptic messages.

Decoding the Cryptic Messages

  • The first message suggests trust but warns about solving a puzzle, while the second page contains jumbled text that appears to be a cipher.
  • A keyboard cipher is identified as the method for decoding, leading to a YouTube link for an unlisted video featuring audio explaining ongoing harassment on their Minecraft server.

The God Watcher Myth

  • The speaker discusses how one friend believes in a ghostly entity called the "God Watcher," which supposedly haunts players regardless of IP bans.
  • Details from the Minecraft entities wiki describe the God Watcher as an urban myth that can follow players if summoned correctly, raising concerns about its effects.

Observations and Concerns

  • Notable coal generation in tunnels raises suspicions about its connection to the God Watcher’s presence and potential tormenting behavior towards players.
  • Cash engages in conversation with Riley regarding their experiences; she expresses paranoia over past events related to this entity.

Distorted Server Experience

  • Cash logs onto a distorted version of their previous server, indicating heightened levels of disturbance compared to earlier experiences.
  • A mysterious audio clip plays during gameplay, adding tension and uncertainty about what lies ahead for Cash and his friends.

Access Issues and New Discoveries

  • Despite not being whitelisted, Cash manages to log into the server again, highlighting ongoing anomalies within their gaming experience.
  • Exploration leads him to discover new areas within the game that were previously unseen, suggesting further developments in this unfolding mystery.

What's Going On with Cash and Riley?

The Server Interaction

  • Cash pulls out a document while Riley expresses confusion, indicating tension in their interaction.
  • Riley questions why she wasn't allowed to enter the server, revealing her frustration and curiosity about the situation.
  • Cash explains that he took care of the "God watcher" issue by transferring it from Riley's friend's Minecraft account to his own, suggesting a deeper connection to the game's mechanics.

The God Watcher Revelation

  • Cash reveals that $42 was sufficient for a new Minecraft account and a pizza, hinting at financial implications tied to their gaming experience.
  • It becomes clear that Cash is not just another player; he is currently being targeted by the God Watcher, which adds an element of personal stakes and urgency to his actions.
Video description

This Minecraft ARG is about a player, Cache, who received a mysterious job offer to work the night shift, watching over an odd Minecraft server. However, when Cache logs onto the server for the first time, it seems as though it’s been abandoned. Watch as I try to figure out what exactly happened to this server and why Cache has been asked to watch over it in the first place. If you don’t know already, I make all of the ARGs I cover myself, and this one was hands down the least confident I’ve ever been making an ARG. I wanted to push myself to try a story a little more based in fiction since it’s something I rarely do, and as a result, I rewrote the story a variety of times to get to a point where I really liked the plot. Either way, I do hope that the end result is still an enjoyable enough video that is worth your time. If it wasn’t clear already, the idea for this ARG was heavily inspired by Five Nights at Freddy’s, and I tried to honor it by really utilizing a lot of sound. Anyway, my fall semester is just about done, so expect a new video a lot sooner, and based on ideas I have so far, a lot grander.
