Des Grieux's Attempt to Free Manon
- Des Grieux plans to plead for Manon's release from her father, but it proves futile as Ballon refuses.
- They spend a large sum of money trying to organize an operation with three other soldiers, but they flee and take their money. Des Grieux is left with no choice but to follow the convoy and occasionally speak ill of them until he runs out of money.
- At this point, he meets Renoncourt and writes again to Tiberge, realizing that his expected funds will not arrive before the departure of the ship for Louisiana.
- Des Grieux sells his horse, boards the ship bound for Louisiana, and leaves behind a farewell letter for Tiberge. He arrives in America two months later.
Life in America
- In New Orleans, a small dilapidated town at that time, they are welcomed joyfully by the locals who believe they are married. They are provided with a cabin by the governor.
- Des Grieux and Manon cultivate friendship with the governor, behaving more maturely than they did in France. They even consider getting married.
- However, the governor's nephew, Thinley B, who was in love with Manon and believed they were married, asks for her hand in marriage. The governor agrees to their marriage despite knowing they are not actually married.
- Des Grieux fights a duel with Thinley B but is disarmed. Thinley B spares his life but intends to have him killed along with Manon if he learns the truth about their relationship.
- Fearing for their lives, Des Grieux and Manon flee into the wilderness to seek refuge in another colony where they can live happily.
Despair and Reunion
- In the harsh wilderness, Des Grieux becomes desperate and digs a grave for himself, wanting to die alongside Manon. However, during this time, he realizes that he was only slightly injured and not dead as he had thought. He orders a search for them even after what happened.
