Tragedy and Borders: The Migrant Crisis in Europe

Overview of Recent Tragedies

  • A tragic incident occurred on February 26, resulting in the deaths of over 60 migrants, including around 20 children, off the coast of Calabria, Italy. This highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by migrants.
  • The Italian government, led by Georgia Meloni's far-right administration, has enacted laws that hinder NGO rescue operations at sea, exacerbating the situation for those attempting to cross.

European Responses to Migration

  • As more European countries fortify their borders against migration, there is a growing call for EU funding to support border security measures such as barbed wire.
  • Currently, 12 European nations have constructed walls along their borders totaling approximately 2,000 km. The trend began in the 1990s with Spain's barriers at Ceuta and Melilla aimed at curbing immigration from North Africa.

Historical Context of Border Walls

  • Following the Arab Spring in 2011 and an influx of migrants from Africa and the Middle East, Greece built a barrier along its border with Turkey. Bulgaria followed suit shortly after.
  • In response to the migrant crisis triggered by Syria's civil war in 2015, several countries erected walls: Hungary closed its borders with Serbia and Croatia while Slovenia fenced its Croatian border.

Recent Developments

  • By August 2021, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia decided to close their borders with Belarus amid a manufactured migrant crisis orchestrated by Belarusian leader Lukashenko.
  • The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 prompted neighboring countries like Finland to propose new border constructions with Russia. Poland also announced plans for an electronic fence near Kaliningrad.

Criticism of EU Policies

  • Despite these developments in border security measures across Europe, NGOs criticize the EU for not supporting maritime rescue operations adequately. Since 2014, nearly 26,000 migrants are believed to have disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea due to inadequate rescue efforts.
