What Are Nickel-Cadmium Batteries?
Overview of Nickel-Cadmium Batteries
- Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries are rechargeable batteries commonly used in wireless devices such as mobile phones, shavers, camcorders, flashes, portable electronics, and tools.
- The anode (negative pole) of these batteries is made from metallic cadmium, which loses electrons during the discharge process.
- The cathode (positive pole), which receives the electrons, consists of metallic nickel coated with hydrated nickel oxide.
Chemical Reactions and Functionality
- The chemical reactions occurring within NiCd batteries produce insoluble products that adhere to the electrodes until the battery discharges completely.
- Once the battery stops functioning due to depletion, it can be recharged using a device connected to a household electricity supply known as a charger.
