History of Volleyball
Origins of Volleyball
- The history of volleyball began in Massachusetts, USA, in 1895, created by physical education teacher William Morgan.
- The original name for volleyball was "mintonette," inspired by tennis; it featured a higher net than that used in tennis.
Development of the Volleyball
- A lightweight leather ball was designed to be larger than a tennis ball but lighter than a basketball, facilitating easy play over the net.
Establishment of Rules
- In 1912, the number of players per volleyball team was set at six, which remains unchanged today.
- Scoring rules evolved by 1916 to resemble modern systems; matches required two sets to win and changed from 21 points to 15 points.
Spread and Evolution
- Volleyball reached Europe in 1915 through American soldiers during World War I and gained popularity particularly in Eastern Europe due to indoor games being suitable for cold climates.
Key Rule Changes
- Significant rule changes occurred in 1920 with a maximum of three touches allowed per team. Blocking rules were formally recognized only in 1948.
Olympic Recognition
- Volleyball became an official Olympic sport at the Tokyo Games in 1964 when international rules were standardized.
Modern Regulations
- In 1994, new regulations allowed players to use any part of their body, including feet, to play the ball starting January 1, 1995.
