Introduction to Microsoft Excel

• Microsoft Excel is recognized as one of the best applications for creating spreadsheets, processing numbers, generating work reports, and managing data.

• The application was first introduced in 1982 with a spreadsheet called Multiplan.

Early Competition and Development

• Multiplan gained popularity in large systems but could not surpass its competitor Lotus 1-2-3, which performed well on personal computers.

• In response to this competition, Microsoft developed a new spreadsheet application to rival Lotus 1-2-3.

Launch of Excel

• The first version of Excel was launched in 1985 for Macintosh; the initial Windows version was named Microsoft Excel 2.0 and released in 1987.
