Switch a Power BI Report's dataset without needing Premium!

Moving a Power BI Report from One Workspace to Another

In this video, Patrick from Guyana Cube demonstrates how to move a live-connected report from one workspace to another and reconnect it to another data set using the Power BI desktop.

Connecting to Production Data Set

  • To switch between data sets in the Power BI desktop, go to Transform Data and select Data Source Settings.
  • Choose the data set that is already published out to production and click Connect.
  • Ensure that the schema is the same between those two data sets because if they are different, things might not work as expected.

Publishing Report to Production

  • Save your changes and publish the report out for production.
  • The new report will appear in your workspace in production.

Conclusion

  • You can use the Power BI desktop instead of writing PowerShell code to switch between data sets when moving a live-connected report from one workspace to another.
  • Make sure that the schema is consistent between data sets before switching them in order for things to work properly.
