How Are Giant Screws Made?
The Importance of Strong Fasteners
- A structure's strength is directly linked to the quality of its fasteners, particularly in large construction projects that require massive screws.
- Anchor bolts can measure up to 30 centimeters long and are essential for holding together significant structures like sports stadiums, roller coasters, wind turbines, and bridges.
Manufacturing Process of Giant Screws
- All giant screws start as solid steel bars measuring 6 meters long, made from an extremely strong alloy used in bridge and building construction.
- A computerized saw automatically cuts these bars into sections of 28 centimeters. Precision is critical; if not polished correctly, the screws could fail.
Shaping the Screw Heads
- The same machine that polishes also creates a beveled edge on the screw's end to guide it into beams or bridges.
- To form the head of the screw, one end is placed in a copper induction coil that softens the metal using high-frequency heat, reaching temperatures just below steel's melting point.
Finalizing and Hardening Process
- After shaping, screws pass through a fire wall en route to a tempering oven; surprisingly, flames here primarily serve to burn outside air rather than provide heat.
- Inside the oven, pieces are treated at over 800 degrees Celsius. This intense heat alters their molecular structure and hardens the steel significantly.
Threading and Lubrication
- Once cooled, screws are threaded under pressure between two shafts exerting 40 kilograms.
