- Natural rubber remains a key material in tire production, sourced from latex produced in the bark of rubber trees. India stands out as a significant producer of natural rubber for nearly a century.
Tire Manufacturing Process
- Large factories with skilled workers produce over 250 million tires annually using both natural and synthetic rubber. Synthetic rubber is derived from petroleum polymers.
- Latex undergoes pressing and drying processes before being transformed into solid rubber sheets through heating. This traditional method has persisted for a century.
- Tire construction involves wrapping multiple layers of rubber around a metal drum to form the tire's structure. Various components such as natural and synthetic rubbers, chemical additives, steel belts, textiles fibers, sulfur, zinc oxide, and carbon black are mixed under heat and pressure to create a durable compound.
Tire Assembly and Reinforcement
- The compound is rolled into sheets for further processing into tire sidewalls and treads. Steel-reinforced fabric layers are added to enhance tire strength.
- Steel cords are embedded for reinforcement while polyester sheets are introduced for inner lining. These layers are wrapped around each other at angles to create ventilation channels within the tire.
