Introduction to Korean Grammar Particle - 도

In this video, we learn about the Korean grammar particle 도. We will understand what a particle is and how it can be used in a sentence to add meaning to it. We will also learn how to use the particle after nouns.

Understanding 도

• A particle is a piece of grammar in Korean that can be used in a sentence to add meaning to it.

• The particle 도 means 'even,' or 'also,' or 'too,' depending on whatever sounds best in English.

• It can be added directly to any noun in Korean, or even to any particle in Korean.

• This particle replaces many other particles like the object marker or the topic marker.

Using 도 after Nouns

• We can use 도 after nouns like 저는 'as for me' 커피를 'coffee' 마시고 싶어요. 마시다 meaning 'to drink,' so 'I want to drink coffee.'

• We can say 저도 커피를 마시고 싶어요 which means "I also want to drink coffee."

• Similarly, we can use 피자도, 한국어도, 빌리도 etc.

Conversation Practice

• The conversation between 알렉스 'Alex' and 제시카 'Jessica' demonstrates the usage of 도.

• Jessica replies with 저도 커피를 마시고 싶어요 which means "I also want to drink coffee."

• She further says 저도 케이크를 좋아해요 which means "I too like cake."

Notes on Usage

• If you want to use the subject marker or the object marker with 도, simply pick one or the other. You do not use them together.

• Some combinations like 은도, 는도, 도는, 을도 or 를도 or 도를 don't work.
