Las condiciones inhumanas de las escuelas mexicanas
Educational Crisis in Mexico
Overview of the Situation
- In Mexico, over 100,000 children study under precarious conditions, with schools filled with inadequate classrooms that hinder effective learning for young students. The lack of solutions is exacerbated by conflicts between teachers opposing educational reforms and the government.
Poor Infrastructure
- Many children attend classes in severely dilapidated environments, including flooded rooms and makeshift roofs. Some schools have walls made from materials like cardboard or plastic, and many lack basic facilities such as bathrooms.
Harsh Learning Conditions
- Students face extreme temperatures; during cold weather, they suffer from the cold, while hot weather leads to discomfort due to noisy roofs that trap heat. Rain also poses a problem as students get wet inside their classrooms.
Educational Rights Violations
- Nearly 60% of schools do not meet minimum standards necessary to ensure children's right to learn. Teachers have created a Facebook group to share photos and videos highlighting their dire situations. Over 6,000 schools lack water access, and more than 20,000 do not have any bathrooms.
Corruption and Inequity in Funding
- There are funds available for education; however, corruption diverts these resources inequitably towards urban rather than rural or indigenous schools. While some teachers work in deplorable conditions, others protest against evaluation measures in Mexico City.
