What is SERIFU? Animating lip sync action in Anime

What is Serifu?

Overview: This video explains the concept of serifu, a type of animation used in Japanese cartoons and anime. It covers the three types of images used in serifu, how voice acting is incorporated, and how to create a realistic serifu.

Types of Images

  • Closed Mouth: The first type of image used in serifu is a closed mouth.
  • Half Open Mouth: The second type of image used in serifu is a half open mouth, which is created by the in-betweener.
  • Open Mouth: The third type of image used in serifu is an open mouth.

Voice Acting

  • Voice acting is sometimes done before keyframing. In this case, the dialogue's length and intonation are listed in the time sheet, which the keyframe artist will refer to when drawing.

Creating a Realistic Serifu

  • The serifu should appear like a random arrangement of open, half open, and closed mouths.
  • If the final serifu looks too off and doesn't look good, it can be rearranged in the timesheet.
  • This simplified mouth animation saves money, time, and energy for animators.
